Workplace AED readiness: building a practical inspection routine

A simple framework for assigning ownership, checking device readiness and addressing problems before an emergency.

5-minute read • Reviewed October 2026

Installing an automated external defibrillator is an important step, but readiness depends on what happens after installation. A device that cannot be found, accessed or used promptly may not support the response plan as intended. A workplace inspection routine should follow the manufacturer's instructions and the organization's emergency procedures, with clear responsibility for correcting problems.

01

Assign a device owner and backup

Identify who is responsible for routine readiness checks, who covers absences and how faults are reported. Keep a record of the model, location and applicable manufacturer guidance. The organization should not rely on a single employee's informal memory.

02

Follow the manufacturer's inspection instructions

Check the device status indicator and any recommended visual or functional checks at the intervals specified for the particular model. Review pads, battery status and expiry dates according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid improvising a test that could consume a component or change the device state.

03

Check access and wayfinding

Verify that the AED remains reachable during the hours and circumstances covered by the emergency plan. Temporary construction, locked doors, furniture changes and signage problems can affect access. Include the location in staff orientation without publishing sensitive building information.

04

Connect inspection with training and response

Employees should know how to activate emergency services and locate the device. Review training needs, response roles and the relevant local emergency response guidance. Training does not replace calling emergency services, and an AED should be used according to its prompts and applicable training.

05

Record deficiencies and confirm resolution

Use a short log with the date, device identifier, observed status, action owner and closure evidence. Escalate failed indicators, missing supplies or access problems promptly. After any use, follow the manufacturer's post-use instructions before returning the device to service.

A PRACTICAL NEXT STEP

The goal is a device that is accessible, maintained and integrated into a practical response plan. LifeReady can help workplaces discuss training and readiness priorities without making unverified certification claims.
